The moment the world "aged into darkness" was never observed. It was calculated backward.

Hindu tradition dates the start of the Kali Yuga — the current degenerate age — to a precise instant: the night of 17–18 February, 3102 BCE, when the Sun, Moon and planets supposedly stood in grand conjunction. It is treated as a real event, the hinge of cosmic history. But the planets were not in conjunction that night. The date was not seen. It was computed — a convenient mathematical zero-point projected into the deep past by a brilliant astronomer, and then, over centuries, mistaken for a memory.

The brilliance is real. Say that first.

Āryabhaṭa · 499 CE

None of this diminishes Āryabhaṭa, who was one of the finest scientific minds of the ancient world. In his Āryabhaṭīya — which he tells us he wrote at age 23, in the year "3600 of the Kali Yuga," i.e. 499 CE — he computed the length of the sidereal year as 365.25858 days, wrong by about three minutes; he understood the Earth's rotation, using the image of a boat passing a stationary shore; he worked with zero, place-value, and π. His astronomy was translated into Arabic and shaped the Islamic and, later, Western scientific traditions. The platform states this plainly: the mathematics is genuine, world-class, and worth celebrating. What follows is not a charge against his science. It is about what was done with one of his numbers.

why 3102 BCE existed at all

Āryabhaṭa's astronomy runs on the yuga — a vast period in which all the planets complete whole numbers of revolutions and so return to a common starting line. To compute planetary positions, you need an epoch: a moment of zero longitude from which everything is counted. Āryabhaṭa set that epoch at sunrise (or midnight) on 17–18 February 3102 BCE, defining it as the instant the Sun, Moon and planets were last together at zero longitude — and called it the start of the Kali Yuga. It is, functionally, the "year zero" of his calculation system: not a remembered event, but the anchor a mathematician needs to make the arithmetic close.

A calculating system needs a starting line. He drew one in the deep past. It was never a place anyone stood — only a number the mathematics required.

The planets were not there.

Here is the crux, and the historians of astronomy state it without hedging. On the night of 17–18 February 3102 BCE, the planets were not in conjunction. Modern computation of their real positions shows the mean Sun, Moon and planets "differed widely from one another" — they were scattered across the sky, not gathered at zero longitude. So the epoch cannot have been observed. It was reached by backward extrapolation: run the planetary cycles in reverse from a known later date until they line up on paper, and call that computed alignment the beginning. As one analysis puts it, the date was fixed "as a convenient epoch for starting their calculations," not as a result anyone recorded from the sky.

A computed fiction, hardened into history

The 3102 BCE conjunction is a mathematical artefact — the output of running equations backward, not an event. The historian John Bentley noted two centuries ago that the yugas are "not historical but astronomically interpolated." Yet this computed zero-point became, in tradition, the literal date the current cosmic age began — the moment Kṛṣṇa departed and the world fell into darkness, given to the day. A calculator's convenience was promoted to a chapter of sacred history. The number was real; the event it names never happened.

Why it matters to this platform.

the manufacture of deep time

This is the platform's recurring pattern — the manufactured origin — applied to time itself. Just as divine genealogies were retrofitted onto rulers and the Puruṣa-sūkta onto the caste order, a computed astronomical zero-point was retrofitted onto history as the literal birth of the present age. And the yuga scheme is not neutral: it frames the present as a degenerate age (Kali), a falling-off from a golden past — a cosmology in which decline is natural, hierarchy is the residue of a better time, and the authority of those who remember the "higher" ages is built in. A back-calculated date became the scaffolding for a theory of cosmic decline — and theories of decline are always useful to whoever claims to descend from the golden age.

Who Āryabhaṭa was, and what he actually did

He deserves better than being used as a chronological alibi

Born 476 CE. He states his own age at the time of writing — twenty-three — which makes the Āryabhaṭīya datable to 499 CE with a precision almost nothing else in Indian intellectual history allows.

What he got right, and early:

The earth rotates. He argues that the apparent westward motion of the stars is caused by the earth turning — and gives the analogy of a man in a moving boat seeing the bank move backwards. This is a millennium before Copernicus and it was rejected by his own successors, including Brahmagupta.

Eclipses are shadows. He explains lunar and solar eclipses by the earth's shadow and the moon's interposition — displacing Rāhu and Ketu, the demon heads, as causes. That is a direct rejection of the mythological account, in a religious culture, in the fifth century.

π ≈ 3.1416, described as āsanna — approaching, approximate. He knew it was not exact.

Which makes the use of his work ironic twice over

The man whose date is cited to defend a mythological chronology is the man who removed demons from eclipses. His significant contribution was replacing myth with computation — and a computation of his is now deployed to authorise a myth.

Two different kinds of evidence, and only one is being confused

Linguistic dating is not weak. It is how Latin, Greek, Old English and every other ancient corpus is dated, and it is independent of any manuscript surviving.

What it does not do is produce a day and a month. That is precisely why a computed date to the calendar day is attractive — it offers a false precision that no linguistic method can match, and the precision is an artefact of the arithmetic, not of any record.
