Exhibits

Six lines of enquiry, each followed through the sources.

An exhibit here is an argument that follows one mechanism through the evidence and stops where the evidence stops. Each states what it does not claim.

102 exhibits in six groups, all of them listed and all of them reachable. Sixteen carry a disclosure at their own head — 9 contested, 2 under review, 5 working exhibits — saying in their own words what the evidentiary issue is. A disclosure describes the evidence; it does not withdraw the page. Nothing from the research intake appears here: those drafts are not published.

Caste — how it was built

18 published · 3 with a disclosure

Caste is not treated here as an ancient given. These pages follow the words, the verses, the law and the enforcement that assembled it, and say where each step is attested.

Hindutva defined a Hindu as one whose fatherland and holy land are both India. The genome puts the Vedic fatherland on the steppe. If caste were a Hindu doctrine, leaving Hinduism would end it. Millions of people have run that experiment. The government reports that no manual scavengers exist, and reports the deaths in the same reply. The same catastrophe ended both orders. The monks were back within a generation. The nuns were not.The words of caste were innocent first.Varṇa means colour. It never means occupation. The explicit fourfold varṇa scheme appears together in one Rigvedic verse. The whole hierarchy enters in one late hymn.Caste-by-rebirth is one school's insertion — not shared scripture.A colour-word became a cage. Untouchability came last, and by design.Even in the later Vedic corpus, the four castes are thin, ritual, and rare.Caste was built, and the build is visible in the vocabulary. The holiest verse in Brahmanism was written by a warrior.Dozens of legal systems were operating. One was in a single volume. That one became law.Ask who benefits from the critique, and you can predict what it leaves standing.Caste is written in the genome — and the two sexes are written differently.“When mixing stopped” means two completely different things in this dataset. The founder effects are at the jāti, not the gotra — and that is exactly what the two rules predict. The exclusion of women is the middle of the story, not the beginning. Not everyone tried to break the ladder. Many tried to climb it.The fifth varṇa entered Sanskrit as one man's guess about an ambiguous phrase.Śūdra appears once in the Rigveda. It appears 1,053 times in the law books.

Also in this group, with a disclosure: Caste was not always by birth. The rigidity was imposed — against a reality that kept breaking it · Caste was abuse, encoded as law, disguised as religion · Women's status did not fade with time. It was narrowed, on purpose, as land and priesthood hardened — each says at its own head what the evidentiary issue is.

The Rigveda and its world

14 published · 2 with a disclosure

What the oldest surviving corpus actually says, counted rather than characterised — who is named, who benefits, and which claims the text will not carry.

Also in this group, with a disclosure: The named enemies hold forts, grain, wives and sons — and the hymns celebrate killing them for pay · One party bought immortality. The other party got it — each says at its own head what the evidentiary issue is.

Deep history and archaeology

Sites, graves, cities and the material record, with the excavation politics that decide which ground gets dug and whose report gets published.

A community of five million people descends from about a hundred.A community used to model the Indus woman’s deep ancestry catches snakes for a living, and was told none of this.Eighty-one per cent of Tamil male lineages are indigenous, and castes and tribes carry the same ones.Every caste's maternal lineages are old, local and shared. Only the men were sorted. It was not three expansions. It is one pattern, five thousand years long, and it has not stopped. The ancestry that links Elam and the Indus was herding goats in the Zagros before farming reached either. The genome dates the sealing to two thousand years ago. The survey data says it has not opened. Two waves of men arrived. The people beneath both are in the hills, carrying the oldest lineages on the subcontinent. The ash on the forehead is older than the god who wears it.The Indus built its cities around water — and left no palace to control it.Keeladi: a literate southern city — and an excavation the state could not leave alone.Meluhha: the Indus world, written down by its trading partners. No word for the plough until the last layer.Sanskrit, Śiva, the Buddha and the temple all crossed the ocean. The brahmanical social order did not.Three Chinese monks spent fifty years in India and wrote it all down.Where the objects were foundMany gaps in this record follow the money and the politics of excavation.Greek writing survives for 250 years and produces no literature. Then it stops for four centuries.Mitra, Varuṇa, Indra and the Nāsatyas are invoked in a Hittite treaty in northern Syria. The steppe evidence is a set of dated individuals, not a migration route.Three ancestries made South Asia. Then endogamy froze them in place. The Hittites spoke Indo-European. Their DNA carries no steppe marker. The deep root of Dravidian points west — and four sciences agree. A Bronze Age grave in Gujarat: a stone circle, a central pit, a cairn of laterite rubble on top.One survey over Guatemala found 61,480 structures. Nothing comparable has been flown over the Indus or the Vaigai.Tamil merchants ran the Bay of Bengal for centuries. One year of it involved burning ports, and that is the year everyone knows.

Also in this group, with a disclosure: Before the Indus, the graves already faced the sun · Who had it first · The working language of the Persian empire, written for 2,300 years and still partly undeciphered — each says at its own head what the evidentiary issue is.

Language, script and naming

18 published

Scripts, sound changes and the renaming of places and people — the machinery by which a past is made to sound like it belonged to someone.

Religion, science and the living present

11 published · 2 with a disclosure

Traditions that were not what they are now said to have been, and the present-day arguments that reach back for them.

Also in this group, with a disclosure: Origin myths were made to order — divine ancestry, retrofitted for whoever needed legitimacy · Traditional medicine, taken seriously — which means taken critically — each says at its own head what the evidentiary issue is.

Power over the record

8 published · 5 with a disclosure

Who kept the manuscripts, who funds the excavations, who writes the textbook — and what that custody does to what can be known.

Also in this group, with a disclosure: Why do people at the bottom of a hierarchy defend it? · Their own heroes were merged into someone else's story · They built a party around their own forgotten king. Then others claimed him · They already knew. In 1873, they said it out loud · The science of ancestry is a battlefield. Read it accordingly — each says at its own head what the evidentiary issue is.

The complete list, filterable, is in the research index. The instruments are in Explore.
