Every attribution on this platform rests on a document. That is a limit, not a neutral fact — because a practice can be centuries old before anyone writes a rule about it, and the person who writes the rule acquires the claim. This page is about what that systematically does to the record, and about the second error it enables: naming a thing after whoever handed it to you.
The Fibonacci sequence is routinely credited in Indian contexts to Piṅgala, c. 200 BCE. That is not what Piṅgala did. The Chandaḥśāstra gives the binary enumeration of metres and the Meru-prastāra — the triangle of binomial coefficients.
The recurrence itself — each term the sum of the two before it — is stated by Virahāṅka, roughly eight centuries later, and then by Gopāla and by Hemacandra around 1135–1150, before Fibonacci in 1202.
Credit drifted backwards to the more famous earlier name — which is the same mechanism that later moved it forwards to Fibonacci.
And even Virahāṅka is not the origin. The sequence arises from counting the arrangements of short and long syllables in a metre. Poets were doing that before anyone wrote a sūtra about it. Virahāṅka codified a practice; the practice has no author, no date and no name, and never will.

A tradition that writes acquires claims. A tradition that does not, does not — regardless of which one did the thing first.
This platform's Sanskrit corpus is 1.8 million words because Sanskrit was written, copied, preserved and digitised. The oral traditions of the same centuries left nothing countable. Every frequency chart here is therefore a chart of what one literate tradition said, presented against a silence that is not evidence of absence.
The corpus is not a sample of what people thought. It is a complete record of what one group wrote down and a total blank for everyone else.

Every one of these names the carrier, and every one is wrong. The bird is from Mesoamerica and was domesticated there.
The pattern is exact and it is everywhere: "Arabic numerals" name the transmitters of an Indian system. "Damascus steel" names the market for crucible steel whose ingots came from South India and Sri Lanka. "Greek astrology" names the language of composition of a corpus assembled in Egypt from Babylonian and Egyptian material.
A name records the last leg of a journey. It is evidence about trade routes, and no evidence at all about origins.
When a thing has a Sanskrit name and no earlier attested name, the Sanskrit name is the oldest record, not the origin — and for most of South Asia before writing, an earlier undocumented name is more likely than not.

The formulation to use is "earliest attested as," never "originates in." Attestation is a fact about the archive. Origin is a claim about the past, and the archive is usually too thin to support one.
Ādivāsi legal, medical and ecological knowledge — transmitted orally, in languages with no early written corpus, by communities the colonial record encountered as subjects rather than as sources.
Women's transmission — songs, ritual practice, midwifery, foodways, textile technique. The Therīgāthā exists because a monastic order wrote it down. There is no comparable act of recording for anyone outside one.
Artisan and technical knowledge — metallurgy, dyeing, weaving, boat-building, construction. Wootz steel was made for well over a millennium and there is no manual. The knowledge lived in workshops and died with them.
Performance — the yāḻ had a repertoire and a technique. The instrument is described in poems and carved in stone, and there is no notation and no teacher.
Everything spoken in the Indus cities. A script that is not read, over a population in the millions, for seven hundred years.
These are not gaps in the past. They are gaps in the paperwork, and this platform is built entirely out of paperwork.
