Exhibit · who gets the museum
Two archaeologists dug at Rakhigarhi. One got a national museum. The other got transferred four times.
In September 2019, two stories about Indian archaeology ran in the same news cycle. In Delhi, Vasant Shinde stood at a press conference and announced that a genome he had co-authored proved the opposite of what it said. Near Madurai, the site K. Amarnath Ramakrishna had discovered was being dug by a state department, because the national one had closed it, transferred him to Assam, and declared nothing was there. Both men trained at the same Harappan site. Both reported findings that threatened the same claim. Only one was rewarded. This page sets the two side by side, and then widens the frame.
Vasant Shinde
served the narrative
- Training
- BA History, Poona; MA (first class first) AIHC & Archaeology, Deccan College; PhD Protohistoric Archaeology. Genuinely qualified. 43 years of fieldwork.
- The site
- Led Rakhigarhi 2011–2016. First author on the 2019 Cell genome paper.
- What he did with the finding
- The paper found zero steppe ancestry — consistent with steppe arrival after 2500 BCE. At the podium he said it "completely sets aside" migration and that the Indus people spoke Sanskrit. His co-authors publicly disagreed.
- Affiliations
- Documented associate of the RSS; active in Vijnana Bharati, its science wing; on the team of Bhishma IKS under the government's Indian Knowledge Systems initiative.
- What he holds now
- Founding Director General, National Maritime Heritage Complex, Lothal — a flagship national museum. Adjunct Professor, NIAS. CSIR Bhatnagar Fellow. Director, Rakhigarhi Research Project — he still controls the skeletons.
K. Amarnath Ramakrishna
reported what he found
- Training
- Born Palani, Tamil Nadu. Institute of Archaeology, New Delhi — the ASI's own school. Trained in the field at Rakhigarhi and at Sravasti. Museums at Kondapur and Nagarjunakonda.
- The site
- Surveyed the entire Vaigai in 2013–14, Western Ghats to the sea, 8 km either bank. Over 100 sites. Chose Keeladi. 102 trenches on 100 acres. A literate, urban Sangam-era settlement.
- What he did with the finding
- Reported it. Called it a river-valley civilisation. Noted that in 70 years the ASI had run three large excavations in Tamil Nadu — 1947, 1965, 2005 — and none in the interior.
- Affiliations
- None found. A career officer.
- What he holds now
- Transferred to Assam 2017 (challenged, lost). Returned by court order 2019. Transferred 2024, 2024, and June 2025 — to a body described as "largely dysfunctional." His 982-page report, submitted January 2023, remains unpublished.

| Figure | Role | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Michel Danino | No degree in history or archaeology; trained as an engineer. Chaired NCERT curriculum development. Padma Shri. Barred by the Supreme Court, 2026. | Ideological appointment. A foreigner given authority over what Indian children learn about indigeneity, by a nativist movement. |
| Niraj Rai | Built India's only ancient-DNA clean room, 2018. Said on record in August 2019 that migration "did happen." Stood beside Shinde three weeks later. Now runs the lab whose next result was announced before the samples were run. | Compromise under capture. The scientist who knows, inside the institution that decides. |
| Thangaraj & Singh | CCMB, 2009. Controlled the samples. Forced "West Eurasian" to become "Ancestral North Indian" — converting an origin into a location. | Anticipatory self-censorship. Serious scientists softening a label to keep working. Reich's tensest day. |
| P. S. Sriraman | Took over Keeladi phase 3 after the transfer. Reported nothing significant. Retired. Asked in 2025 to write the official report. | The instrument. The signature on the closure. |
| Hemasagar Naik | ASI Director (Exploration & Excavation). Issued the 2025 order to "rework" the report. Given Amarnath's post when he was moved. | The administrator. Where the paper trail runs. |
| The five-member committee | Assessed the 982-page report in 114 pages, February 2026. Never visited the site or examined the material. | The review that reviews nothing. |
| Reich & Narasimhan | Foreign collaborators. Documented the pressure. Publicly disagreed with the podium. Hold most of the world's ancient genomes. | The other custodian. Right about the science; accountable to no one in the sample either. |
| Ramamoorthy, Gnanaraj, Kavya | Tamil Nadu State Department archaeologists. Ramamoorthy was Amarnath's site supervisor, went to ASI Delhi, and came back through the state exam to finish the work. Built the Keeladi museum; opened Porunai, December 2025. | The people who did the work once the national agency stopped. |
The comparison is the page. Putting the two side by side and sortable is the clearest form it can take.
Four ways to be inside this.
the categories, and what each one cost
Neither man is a category on his own. Set alongside the others documented on this platform, the positions available inside a captured field become visible — and they are not reducible to complicity and courage.
| Who | What they did | Category | What it cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thangaraj & Singh CCMB, 2009 | Controlled the samples; softened "West Eurasian" to "Ancestral North Indian" | Anticipatory self-censorship | A label that converted an origin into a location. Still in use seventeen years later. |
| Niraj Rai BSIP, 2019– | Extracted the DNA. Said on record that migration happened. Stood on the stage where it was denied. Now runs the only lab. | Compromise under capture | The next answer, if it comes, comes through him. |
| Vasant Shinde 2019– | Inverted his own co-authored, state-funded paper at a press conference | Instrumentalisation | Rewarded: a national museum at Lothal, and continued custody of the material. |
| Michel Danino | No relevant qualification; a fifty-year prior commitment; control of the national curriculum | Ideological appointment | Children's textbooks. Barred by the Supreme Court, 2026. |
| P. S. Sriraman ASI, 2017 | Signed "no significant findings" at Keeladi after the discoverer was transferred | The instrument | Asked to sign it again in 2025, seven years later. |
| K. Amarnath Ramakrishna ASI, 2014– | Reported what he dug up. Refused, in writing, to revise it. | Punished | Four transfers. A 982-page report unpublished since January 2023. |
| Veena Mushrif-Tripathy Deccan College, 2026 | Co-authors with the Reich lab on Ladakh | The safe collaboration | Nothing — which is the point. The channel works when the ground does not threaten the claim. |
| Reich & Narasimhan | Documented the pressure. Disagreed with the podium publicly. Hold the data. | The other custodian | Accountable to no one in the sample either. |
Only one row is a villain in the ordinary sense. The others are scientists making the calculations available to them — soften a word to keep the collaboration alive; stay on the stage and keep the laboratory; publish on Ladakh because Ladakh is safe. Each is individually defensible. Together they are how a field gets captured without anyone deciding to capture it.
And the one row that refused is the one that was moved four times.
One nation, or two treatments.
the question the comparison forces
A national agency has run three large excavations in Tamil Nadu in seventy years, by its own officer's count. When that officer found the site the region had waited for, the agency moved him, closed the dig, and declared it empty. A state department, ordered in by a court, found thirteen thousand objects.
Meanwhile the officer who inverted a Harvard genome to say the Indus spoke Sanskrit was given a national museum at Lothal — an Indus site, in Gujarat, framed as the origin of the maritime India the Vedas never mention.
The nation is one on paper. Its archaeology is administered as two: one whose findings are amplified, inverted if necessary, and monumentalised; one whose findings are transferred, delayed, and reviewed by committees that never visit. The line between them is not north and south. It is whether the ground threatens the claim.
It is not a claim that Shinde is unqualified — he is trained and experienced, which is precisely why his podium claims fail on their merits rather than his credentials. It is not a claim that Amarnath is faultless — his chronology is contested by serious archaeologists, and contest is normal. It is a claim about treatment: that qualification, method and finding predicted nothing about who was rewarded, and alignment with one claim predicted everything.
The honest limits.
- Cited: Shinde's credentials and appointments from his institutional biographies; his RSS and Vijnana Bharati association and Bhishma IKS listing from published reporting and the body's own team page; the press-conference statements and co-author disagreement from contemporaneous coverage; Amarnath's training, the Vaigai survey, transfers, the Central Administrative Tribunal ruling, the High Court order, the report dates, the ASI's May 2025 letter, the June 2025 transfer, the Sriraman commission, and the February 2026 committee assessment, all from reporting in The Hindu, Scroll, The News Minute, Deccan Herald and The Week; the TNSDA artefact and radiocarbon figures from the department's published results.
- NOT claimed: that any individual acted on instruction. Motive is inferred from pattern and stated as inference.
- NOT claimed: that Amarnath's dating is correct. The ASI's request to reassess chronology is a live scientific dispute; the finding here is about process — the transfer, the closure, the delay, and a review conducted without a site visit.
- NOT claimed: that Rai endorsed Shinde's statements. He is on record disagreeing. His presence on the podium is a fact; his agreement is not.
- Caste and wealth of the individuals are not researched here. The institutional composition of the bodies involved is a separate, structural question and is treated elsewhere.
What is documented, and what is inferred
The page compares named living researchers. Marking which statements are documented record and which are the page's reading is a duty, not a feature.
