Gotra claims unbroken patrilineal descent from a named sage. If that were true it would be the cleanest genetic test in South Asia: same gotra, same Y-lineage. The signal that actually appears in the data is at a different level entirely, and its location is the finding.

A gotra is an exogamous patrilineal clan whose members claim descent in the male line from a named ṛṣi. Marriage within one is prohibited. If the claim held literally, every man in a gotra would share a Y chromosome descending from one individual perhaps three thousand years ago.
That is a falsifiable prediction, and it is the kind of thing Y-chromosome data is unusually good at testing, because the Y does not recombine and traces a single male line cleanly.

Gotra is a rule about who you may not marry. It was never a record of who your ancestors were.
The robust and repeatedly replicated finding in South Asian population genetics is that many groups carry strong founder effects: a small number of ancestors, followed by many generations of marriage within the group. Some of these are as pronounced as the founder events in populations conventionally cited as extreme examples.
Those founder effects sit at the level of the endogamous community — the jāti — not at the level of the gotra.
Which is precisely what the two marriage rules predict. The kinship page on this platform sets out the mechanism: gotra exogamy forces marriage outward within the caste; jāti endogamy forbids it leaving the caste.
So the gotra is defined as the unit you must marry OUT of, and the jāti as the unit you must marry WITHIN. A breeding population forms at the boundary that contains marriage, not at the one that pushes it away. The genetic signal appears exactly where the marriage rule puts it.
The rule that constructs a reproductive population is the endogamous one. The exogamous one guarantees that gotra can never be a lineage in the genetic sense — it exists to be married out of.
The chart is schematic. Bar lengths represent how sharply each unit emerges as a distinct cluster in population data. They are not measured statistics and should not be quoted as such.
And the negative result is not an attack on anyone's ancestry. That gotra does not track a Y-lineage says nothing about whether a family's traditions are real or valuable. It says the institution was doing a different job from the one a modern genealogical reading assumes — regulating marriage, not recording descent.
Anyone wanting to test it properly needs: Y-chromosome sequences from men of the same declared gotra across multiple regions and jātis, with coalescence dating. If gotra were genealogical, those men would coalesce at roughly the founder's date. That is the experiment, and it is straightforward to describe and expensive to run.
