Exhibit · scarcity and its uses

Sixty-one skeletons gave one genome, by physics. Thirteen thousand artefacts gave "nothing," by decision.

Between 2014 and 2019 two excavations ran in the same years at opposite ends of the subcontinent. Both produced evidence that a single claim could not survive. At one, the material was genuinely scarce — heat and time had destroyed almost all of it. At the other, the material was abundant and well preserved. Both ended in "nothing." One "nothing" was true. The other was written. This page sets them side by side, because scarcity — real or made — is the instrument in both.

Rakhigarhi's funnel narrows because DNA does not survive heat and time — the paper reports over 200 libraries built to recover one individual. Keeladi's funnel is drawn full and then struck through: nothing narrowed it except a report. After the Madras High Court transferred the site to the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology, it produced over thirteen thousand artefacts and radiocarbon dates to 580 BCE.

Why the two techniques.

what decides suppression versus inversion

You suppress what you can and invert what you can't

Rakhigarhi could not be suppressed. Harvard co-authors, a *Cell* publication, international press, the Government of India's own CSIR on the funding line. The data was going to print. So the response was to let it print and announce its opposite — and the press had written the inversion before the podium was reached.

Keeladi could be suppressed. A state officer's report inside a state agency, with no foreign co-author and no journal embargo. So the response was to move the officer, close the site, declare it empty, and keep the report. It took a court to reopen the ground and eight years to fail to publish what was found there.

Neither technique required destroying a bone or a potsherd. Control of interpretation did the work in one case; control of publication in the other. The material survived both. What did not survive was the sentence that would have made either finding legible to an ordinary reader.

Where real and made scarcity meet.

AnSI and the 1922–58 collections

Three hundred skeletal remains from Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Burzahom, Lothal and others, excavated a century ago, stored for decades, now being sequenced in the country's only ancient-DNA laboratory. On the Rakhigarhi rate, expect a handful of genomes at most. That is real scarcity, and it is coming.

And the conclusion was announced in October 2024, before the samples were run: "continuity... without significant genetic changes." That is made scarcity, prepared in advance. A few successes, selected and processed under ministry supervision, with no independent laboratory replicating, and the answer already given — this is where the two scarcities are designed to meet. It does not require anyone to break anything. It requires only that few samples work, and that the ones that work are the ones reported.

The study was due December 2025. As of this page, nine months later, the laboratory has published one peer-reviewed paper — twelve mitochondrial genomes from Kashmir, competently done, on politically safe material. On Harappa, silence.

What scarcity does to custody.

When one sample in sixty-one succeeds, whoever holds the bones holds the answer, and holds it for years — because the next extraction may never work. When a report can be kept in a drawer, whoever holds the drawer holds the site. Scarcity, real or made, converts custody into interpretation. That is why the question to ask about any Indian excavation is not "what was found" but "who holds it, and what have they said it will show."

The comparison the platform will not make

Rakhigarhi's low yield is not evidence of tampering. The Reich laboratory processed the samples with every incentive to recover more, and recovered one; tropical preservation is a known, published limit. Presenting the 1-in-61 as suspicious would hand critics the one argument they need to dismiss Keeladi alongside it. The strength of this exhibit is that one scarcity is genuine — and that the other was made to look like it.

The honest limits.

Made visible: that two excavations in the same years produced two "nothings" — one measured by physics and documented sample by sample, the other signed after a transfer and reversed by thirteen thousand objects once a court moved the dig. Kept dark: that the technique chosen — inversion or suppression — depended only on whether the finding could be stopped, and that the next study has been designed to have both scarcities at once. Put outside: the ground itself, which held what it held regardless of who was allowed to say so.
